| …..settling for less this Christmas! The usual desire for more things on a “wish list” I was hoping to fulfill leaves me disappointed or disillusioned, and the deepest meaning of “Christmas” escaping me. I want more. The truths of Christmas are deep but not beyond grasp.
Matthew and Luke give us the facts: Joseph, Mary, Bethlehem’s manger, a baby, angels, taxes, shepherds, and stars. Even His Name…Counselor, Emmanuel, Mighty God, JESUS, son of God is given! But not the reason. We place that saying, “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” in our homes, offices and on bumper stickers. Many times done with a shallow grasp of the “truth.” It is not until we read John’s gospel that we get the reason for Christmas. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Greek rendering of the “word” is “logos.” That is where English derives “logic.” Think with me… Jesus is the “logic” of God. John continues…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. That Word took on our flesh, became vulnerable to the human conditions on the earth. Not only flesh, He “spoke.” To sum up…Jesus becomes the “voice” of God. When we are tempted to categorize Christmas as a nostalgic children’s story or a fable made up to entertain the simple, remember Jesus is the “logic” of God. In no other way could God communicate His love, uncompromising compassion and mercy more effectively than to be written in to the creation He created and never gives up on. Jesus is His Voice. I cannot stop thinking…”I will never leave or forsake you”, “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more”, “I go to prepare a place for you that where I am, you may be also”, “fear not”, “God so loved this world He gave His only begotten Son”, ” My Peace I leave with You.” “Come” is the Voice of God to me. You really do not know a person until you hear their voice. I am listening to Christmas like never before!
